Established in October 2016, the Kota Kinabalu Film and Video Association (KKFVA) is a registered non-profit organisation dedicated to the development of filmmakers in Sabah, where our film industry is relatively young compared to Peninsular Malaysia. Located in the north of Borneo island, Sabah is distinguished by its stunning natural landscapes, unique biodiversity, and multitude of indigenous cultures and languages, making it a tropical paradise for remarkable storytelling. Since its inception, KKFVA has aimed to provide its members with invaluable resources, industry insights, and networking platforms to help grow our fledgling film industry.

Sabah is home to a growing number of young filmmakers whose short films have already been selected for acclaimed international film festivals and competitions. Furthermore, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Sabah’s film industry emerged resilient, with eight locally produced feature films screened in cinemas nationwide by 2024, marking the region as a burgeoning cinematic talent.

Recognising the rapid growth of Sabah's film industry, KKFVA, NOW REBRANDING TO SAFVA, is now actively working towards fostering connections and positive collaborations in the region and beyond to share our precious Borneo stories with global audiences - beginning with TIFFCOM.
