SYNOPSIS

In the highlands of Sabah, Borneo-Malaysia, the indigenous Dusun people face growing threats from deforestation and climate change, endangering their traditional way of life. This documentary follows villagers working with Dr. Stephen on the Birdwing Butterfly project, aiming to restore the rare butterfly's habitat. Their efforts reflect their deeper struggle to preserve their land, culture, and future in the face of environmental and economic challenges.

William Chiang

William Chiang is a Malaysia-born filmmaker based in Sabah, North Borneo. As a director and producer, he is known for crafting personal and distinctive films that blend fiction and documentary, establishing himself as part of a new wave of storytellers from East Malaysia with a unique narrative style.

Chiang made his directorial debut with Heart of Gaya Street (2016), which earned critical acclaim at the KKIFF Film Festival. His first venture as a producer, Unlocking Bengoh, won the Silver Award at the Freedom Film Festival 2016. Renowned for exploring the human condition and occasionally making political statements through his work, he produced The Last Ring Lady, which won The Asian Pitch in 2019 and aired globally on NHK (Japan), KBS (Korea), and PTI TV.

In 2021, he directed the 13-episode travel series Best of Sabah for RTM/Astro. Chiang currently works with a media agency in Kota Kinabalu.
